    Improvement of detection and tracking techniques in multistatic passive radar systems. (Mejora de técnicas de detección y seguimiento en sistemas radar pasivos multiestáticos)

    Esta tesis doctoral es el resultado de una intensa actividad investigadora centrada en los sensores radar pasivos para la mejora de las capacidades de detección y seguimiento en escenarios complejos con blancos terrestres y pequeños drones. El trabajo de investigación se ha llevado a cabo en el grupo de investigación coordinado por la Dra. María Pilar Jarabo Amores, dentro del marco diferentes proyectos: IDEPAR (“Improved DEtection techniques for PAssive Radars”), MASTERSAT (“MultichAnnel paSsive radar receiver exploiting TERrestrial and SATellite Illuminators”) y KRIPTON (“A Knowledge based appRoach to passIve radar detection using wideband sPace adapTive prOcessiNg”) financiados por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad de España; MAPIS (Multichannel passive ISAR imaging for military applications) y JAMPAR (“JAMmer-based PAssive Radar”), financiados por la Agencia Europea de Defensa (EDA) . El objetivo principal es la mejora de las técnicas de detección y seguimiento en radares pasivos con configuraciones biestáticas y multiestaticas. En el documento se desarrollan algoritmos para el aprovechamiento de señales procedentes de distintos iluminadores de oportunidad (transmisores DVB-T, satélites DVB-S y señales GPS). Las soluciones propuestas han sido integradas en el demostrador tecnológico IDEPAR, desarrollado y actualizado bajo los proyectos mencionados, y validadas en escenarios reales declarados de interés por potenciales usuarios finales (Direccion general de armamento y material, instituto nacional de tecnología aeroespacial y la armada española). Para el desarrollo y evaluación de cadenas de las cadenas de procesado, se plantean dos casos de estudio: blancos terrestres en escenarios semiurbanos edificios y pequeños blancos aéreos en escenarios rurales y costeros. Las principales contribuciones se pueden resumir en los siguientes puntos: • Diseño de técnicas de seguimiento 2D en el espacio de trabajo rango biestático-frecuencia Doppler: se desarrollan técnicas de seguimiento para los dos casos de estudio, localización de blancos terrestres y pequeños drones. Para es último se implementan técnicas capaces de seguir tanto el movimiento del dron como su firma Doppler, lo que permite implementar técnicas de clasificación de blancos. • Diseño de técnicas de seguimiento de blancos capaces de integrar información en el espacio 3D (rango, Doppler y acimut): se diseñan técnicas basadas en procesado en dos etapas, una primera con seguimiento en 2D para el filtrado de falsas alarmas y la segunda para el seguimiento en 3D y la conversión de coordenadas a un plano local cartesiano. Se comparan soluciones basadas en filtros de Kalman para sistemas tanto lineales como no lineales. • Diseño de cadenas de procesado para sistemas multiestáticos: la información estimada del blanco sobre múltiples geometrías biestáticas es utilizada para incremento de las capacidades de localización del blanco en el plano cartesiano local. Se presentan soluciones basadas en filtros de Kalman para sistemas no lineales explotando diferentes medidas biestáticas en el proceso de transformación de coordenadas, analizando las mejoras de precisión en la localización del blanco. • Diseño de etapas de procesado para radares pasivos basados en señales satelitales de las constelaciones GPS DVB-S. Se estudian las características de las señales satelitales identificando sus inconvenientes y proponiendo cadenas de procesado que permitan su utilización para la detección y seguimiento de blancos terrestres. • Estudio del uso de señales DVB-T multicanal con gaps de transmisión entre los diferentes canales en sistemas radares pasivos. Con ello se incrementa la resolución del sistema, y las capacidades de detección, seguimiento y localización. Se estudia el modelo de señal multicanal, sus efectos sobre el procesado coherente y se proponen cadenas de procesado para paliar los efectos adversos de este tipo de señales

    DVB-T Receiver Independent of Channel Allocation, with Frequency Offset Compensation for Improving Resolution in Low Cost Passive Radar.

    In this article, a commercial low cost solution for increasing DVB-T based passive radar (also referred to as passive coherentlocation)robustnesswith respectto channel allocation and range resolution, is designed. IDEPAR demonstrator is updated to include a new recording system in charge of DVB-T channels reallocation. The use of commercial hardware introduces frequency mismatching between acquired channels that compromises system operation. To face channel frequency alignment, fulfilling the requirements imposed by the high Doppler resolution typical of passive radars, a novel compensation algorithm is proposed, based on the minimization of signal dispersion in the Cross-Ambiguity Function domain. The well-known cyclic prefix van de Beek method is used as reference. Results show an increase in target signal to interference ratio and detection performances, as well as a reduction of clutter dispersion when the novel proposed algorithm is applied. The low cost solution is also compared to a high performance one capable of acquiring a wide bandwidth of sparse DVB-T channels, and performing channel reallocation by digital signal processing. Results show that both systems reached similar performances in terms of range resolution and SNR improvement

    Broadband modified-circle-shape patch antenna with H-aperture feeding for a passive radar array

    In this paper, the design of a broadband modified-circle-shape patch antenna with H-aperture feeding is presented, to be used as single radiating element in the array of the surveillance channel of an UHF passive radar. Different techniques are proposed to achieve a relative bandwidth of more than 30%, and challenging radiation pattern characteristics for the defined application. The achievement of these requirements is proved through measurements in anechoic chamber. A NULA is designed using optimization techniques and considering coupling effects between elements. The NULA was integrated in IDEPAR, the passive radar demonstrator developed in the University of Alcalá, and validated through measurement campaigns. Results prove a significant improvement of the passive radar target detection and bearing estimation capabilities

    CFAR Detectors for DVB-T Passive Radar in non-homogeneous scenarios

    CFAR (Constant False Alarm Rate) detectors were designed and evaluated in non-homogeneous DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial) passive radar scenarios. The CA-CFAR (Cell-Averaged CFAR) is the most widespread incoherent CFAR technique. CA-CFAR detector is optimal under the assumption of homogeneous interference, but CA-CFAR performance is degraded when this assumption is not fulfilled. As an attempt to design CFAR algorithms in non-homogeneous environment, VI-CFAR (Variability Index-CFAR) was proposed. CA-CFAR and VI-CFAR detectors were designed and evaluated in a simulated and real passive radar scenarios. The real data were acquired by IDEPAR demonstrator, a DVB-T passive radar system. Results confirm the suitability of VICFAR based solutions in passive radar scenarios providing detection probabilities much higher than the detection capabilities associated with CA-CFAR.Ministerio de Economía y CompetitividadUniversidad de Alcal

    Improved 2D ground target tracking in GPS-based passive radar scenarios

    Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites offer promising opportunity for Passive Radar systems due to their global coverage and the availability of multiple satellites throughout the world. However, their low power at ground level limits system coverage. In this paper, a GPS based Passive Radar which exploits a single illumination source, and uses digital array processing for ground targets localization is presented. To face signal power problems, a processing scheme combining reconstructed reference signals, adaptive filtering techniques and spatial filtering is implemented. Conventional beamforming techniques are used to increase the level of the target echo before the detection stage, and high resolution DoA estimation techniques are applied to estimate targets azimuth. Ground target localization in local Cartesian space is performed taking into account the system geometry, range and azimuth information. Both synthetic and real radar data are used to analyse system operation. During the measurement campaign, a cooperative vehicle was used for validation purposes.     The TELE-DD randomised controlled trial on treatment adherence in patients with type 2 diabetes and comorbid depression: clinical outcomes after 18-month follow-up

    Clinical depression is associated with poorer adherence to hypoglycaemic medication in patients with diabetes mellitus, leading to poorer glycaemic control, diabetes management, and increased complications. The main aim of the TELE-DD trial was to demonstrate the efficacy of a proactive and psychoeducational telephonic intervention based on motivational interviewing and collaborative care to reduce nonadherence and improve prognosis in individuals with diabetes mellitus and concurrent depression. Design: The TELE-DD project is a three-phased prospective study including a nested randomised controlled trial. Methods: The baseline cohort included the entire population of adult patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and concurrent depression. A randomised controlled trial was conducted in a selection of patients from the baseline cohort, distributed into a control group (n = 192) and an intervention group (n = 192). Monthly telephonic interventions delivered by specifically trained research nurses were centred on a psychoeducational individualised monitoring protocol including motivational interviewing and collaborative care strategies. Clinical and patient-centred data were systematically collected during an 18-month follow-up including HbA1c, Patient Health Questionnaire, and the Diabetes Distress Scale. Results: During the trial, 18-month follow-up HbA1C levels significantly (p < 0.001) decreased in the intervention group at every follow-up from an average of 8.72 (SD:1.49) to 7.03 (SD:1.09), but slightly increased in the control group from 8.65 (SD:1.40) to 8.84 (SD:1.38). Similar positive results were obtained in depression severity and diabetes distress, LDL-cholesterol, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, but only at the 18-month follow-up in body mass index reduction. Conclusions: This is the first trial to concurrently decrease biological and psychological outcomes with a monthly brief telephonic intervention, pointing out that a combined biopsychosocial intervention and collaborative care strategy is essential for current world health challenges.
